Green thinking at West Coast Pet Care Centre.
At West Coast Pet Care Centre, we understand that we not only share this world with each other but with all living organisms (even our furry family members).
It is not going to take one individual, one company, one leader or one country to reduce the effects of climate change. It will take all of us, even the smallest decision will help the big picture if we all can pitch in.
At West Coast Pet Care Centre, we try and do our part.
Renewable Energy.
We have a 55kW Solar Power System established on our Mariginiup location. These panels sit on the roof of two of our sheds, supplying electricity sourced naturally at our facility; reducing our needs on other sources and using a naturally provided alternative, the sun!
All grounds water is underground sourced.
What this means is that we utilise bore water available in our area. Bore water is a natural way of recycling rainwater, which we use to maintain our extensive grass areas for your dog’s enjoyment and also our plant life. By using bore water we are reducing our use of the states drinking water reserves and instead, we are using the winter rain that has soaked into the ground.
Extensive tree plantings.
West Coast Pet Care Centre’s founder, and director, has many, many trees established on the Mariginiup property and also the Bindoon property. What is so great about trees? Well not only do they provide us with oxygen from that carbon dioxide they absorb but they also provide a lot more benefits.
Check out tree’s 16 superpowers from the image below.
Floor heating in our state of the art dog boarding building.
In 2006, West Coast built their latest dog boarding facility to be the best facility possible while maintaining high hygiene standards, functionality and also climate control. Furthermore, part of the building’s design was to have floor heating installed for those cooler months. Not only does this feature reduce the amount of electricity used to heat an entire building, it keeps our canine guests warmer by heating the ground instead of the air.
Go home bags.
Every canine and feline holiday guests receive a go home bag at the end of their stay. Included in these bags are a dshed letter, go home letter, canine cough information letter, shop flyer, rate us flyer, and also a toy for cats and treat for dogs. These bags are frosted EPI, degradable plastic bags. You are more than welcome to decline the bag and contents to reduce waste.
Pet Taxi Service.
At West Coast Pet Care Centre we offer a unique opportunity for your dog or cat to “ride share” to and from our facility. Not only reducing your fuel use, but your pet’s as well. Furthermore, our pet taxi heads out every weekday to a variety of vet partners and locations to pick up or drop off our latest holiday guests. Find out more about our taxi service here: www.west-coast.com.au/pet-taxi.
Cardboard and packaging recycling.
Our fabulous team members often reuse and recycle cardboard and packages from our orders.
Alternative you can reduce postage wastes by either visiting our little shop in our reception, selecting pick up if you are in the Perth metro area, or make a note on check out to reduce paper waste with your order.
Shop products.
We are currently planning on expanding our range of eco/thinking green pet products, but in the meantime we have a couple of brands already available. These brands currently include Snooza and West Paws. Every product has a short blurb in the product description of how they are thinking green or are eco-friendly. You can check out our online store here: www.west-coast.com.au/shop.
We have recently added the following eco/thinking green brands to our online shop and shop front; Eco-Pup, Beco Pets and PLAY!
Ecosia.
One of our team members, who tends to do some of our online research, uses a search engine that plants trees whenever possible. They use the profits from searches to plant trees in areas that have been subjected to deforestation. To find out more, visit their website here: www.ecosia.org.
Our Giving Story.
As a business, we want to start giving back to the community and to the world, we are apart of. What this space, and our upcoming blog about our giving stories.
Areas where we can improve.
We are always actively looking at other areas where we can reduce our waste or take the eco option. Below are areas we are currently exploring;
- Increase the range of eco-friendly green pet products
- In progress…we are excited to say that we are currently putting together two orders, with more planned for the near future with a range of manufactures sourced internationally. Unfortunately, we have been unable to yet locate an Australian eco-friendly pet product business. If you know of one we would love to hear from you!
- Eco postal packaging.
- Postal packaging recycle program
- We are looking at ways where our customers can easily send back postal bags and boxes which we can then reuse.
- Postal labels
- Bin liners
- Paper towel / toilet paper / printing paper / tissues
If you have any ideas for us, we would love to hear from you! Please email shop@west-coast.com.au with your thoughts.
