How to Move Home with Your Dog or Cat
Recently Advantage Petcare approached us to contribute to a blog post about moving house with pets – we were thrilled that they wanted us to share our experience with their readers! We offered some helpful advice in the article, ‘Moving House with Cats and Dogs’.
Many of our guests here at West Coast Pet Centre stay with us while their human families move house. Moving house with a dog or cat can be a stressful experience. People often ask us for tips on how to make sure things run as smoothly as possible so we thought it would be helpful to share some extra advice here!
Crate train your pet for a peaceful move
When you’re moving house, we recommend crate training your pet in advance – or if you haven’t got a crate, your pet’s bed will work just as well. Their crate or bed provides a safe environment where they can always go and relax, no matter what’s going on in the home around them. This will make the moving process less overwhelming for your pet, while also providing a safe way to transport them to your new home. In addition to our premium pet boarding facility and services for cats and dogs, we also have a dog-training program that caters for dogs of all ages and abilities. We can help prepare you and your dog for a seamless experience while moving house.
Stick to the same old routine
Your pet will need the familiarity of their usual routine for at least a couple of weeks following the move. They’ll feel more confident in their new surroundings if they know that some things, including mealtimes and toilet breaks, haven’t changed. This might feel like a lot of hassle in the midst of a move, but long term could help your pet settle into their new environment better. Must-have items for your move
Our top item again would be a crate! This is because it is a familiar environment to the pet no matter where they are. It’s also a safe and convenient mode of transportation. We also recommend toys as a good way of keeping your pet occupied and reducing their stress. Playing regularly will cement your bond with your pet and also make sure they are tired enough to sleep in unfamiliar surroundings. We are proud to be Perth’s premium dog boarding facility, catering for pet owners who want more than just a kennel. We’re more than a boarding kennel for cats and dogs; we’re a full service pet care centre and welcome any pets and their owners in the midst of a move.
