Breed profile: Boston Terrier

March 30, 2016

Looking for a Boston Terrier in Perth?

The Boston terrier is a breed of dog renowned for loyalty, protectiveness its and boisterous attitude. They have a lifespan of 10-14 years of age and grow up to 38cm in height and 11kg in weight. Known as the ‘Little American Gentleman’, they are small in size and come in a range of colours that heavily feature shades of black and white on the coat and chest. Their tails can be seen screwed, straight or dropped, while ears are erect; it is illegal to crop them in Australia (unlike America). Muscular, compact and square, here is a dog with the brains to match the brawn.

Personality

The Boston terrier is suitable to an older family due to its love of the couch, need for constant companionship and relatively easy care. They do have energy, and can be found digging in backyards, wrestling with toys or competing with other pets for the attention of surrounding humans. As they prefer the indoors, this breed is content to live in an apartment and require minimal amounts of exercise to satisfy their needs. Barking can be an issue, especially towards strangers, but the Boston terrier is viewed as a friendly dog that enjoys having people around (as long as they’re not threatening or intimidating in nature). Their love of affection means an owner can cuddle the breed for long amounts of time without annoyance. Noted as being intelligent and attentive, they are gentle despite being stubborn to train. Hyperactivity can be viewed as a negative behavioural trait, but streaks of playfulness and attention-seeking make the Boston terrier a must-have for those in need of a friend.

Health

Respiratory problems can be common in the Boston terrier due to their short noses, which also equates to snoring, drooling and snorting loudly. They must avoid warm temperatures as they can’t cool the air that travels into their lungs. This breed is prone to flatulence, so expect plenty of gas and foul smells when close by. Eye issues are also frequent as their eyes are prominent, so ensure that they are cleaned regularly and checked by your local vet. A narrow pelvis can mean birthing problems, so beware if your dog is about to have puppies. Tumours and deafness are other points of concern, but the Boston terrier is a healthy breed that mostly requires monitoring when weather extremes arise.

Cost

Having a short coat means minimal brushing is required and shedding shouldn’t be too much of an issue. This also raises the need of a jumper in winter to protect the breed from getting too cold. Other than the obvious purchases of toys and a leash, the Boston terrier is a cost-effective dog due to its size and temperament. They do not eat large amounts and prefer to occupy a couch as opposed to destroying it. The one concern would be backyard destruction, but a well trained dog will only occasionally dig holes to be satisfied. This is the perfect option for an older couple, as your pet will join you anywhere and cause few monetary worries.
